Research and Projects

Overview of Research Areas
At the Center of Housing and Health Sciences (CoHHS), our mission is to enhance the well-being of Hispanic communities through targeted research and innovative solutions in housing and health. We focus on understanding and addressing the unique challenges faced by these communities, ensuring that our work is grounded in equity, inclusivity, and sustainability. Our primary research areas include:

Affordable Housing
Recognizing the critical need for affordable housing within Hispanic communities, our research examines the barriers to housing access and affordability. We analyze socioeconomic factors, housing policies, and market dynamics that disproportionately affect these populations. By collaborating with community organizations and stakeholders, we strive to develop actionable strategies that promote equitable housing solutions, ensuring that every individual has a safe and affordable place to call home.

Community Development
Community development is essential to fostering resilience and empowerment among Hispanic populations. Our research focuses on community engagement and participatory approaches that amplify local voices in the development process. We explore how cultural heritage and social networks contribute to community strength, aiming to create initiatives that enhance social cohesion, economic opportunities, and access to vital resources. Our goal is to support the development of vibrant, inclusive neighborhoods that reflect the values and aspirations of Hispanic residents.

Policy Analysis
Through rigorous policy analysis, we evaluate the effectiveness of housing and health policies impacting Hispanic communities. Our research highlights disparities in access to resources and advocates for evidence-based policy reforms that promote equity. By engaging with policymakers and community advocates, we seek to inform and influence policies that address the specific needs of Hispanic families, ensuring they receive the support necessary for health and housing stability.

Environmental Sustainability
Sustainability is integral to our vision for housing and community health. We investigate how environmental factors impact housing quality and health outcomes in Hispanic communities, particularly in the face of climate change. Our research aims to identify sustainable practices that can be integrated into housing development, promoting resilience and ecological health. We believe that sustainable housing solutions are essential for safeguarding the well-being of current and future generations.

Social Equity
Social equity is at the heart of our work. We are committed to understanding and addressing the systemic inequalities that affect Hispanic communities’ access to housing, health care, and social services. Our research examines the intersection of race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status, striving to dismantle barriers to opportunity. By promoting social justice and inclusivity, we aim to create pathways for all individuals to thrive within their communities.
