Texas A&M’s solar decathlon partners include the Bryan/ College Station Habitat for Humanity, which has built over 300 homes in the area.

We couldn’t do a project like this without A&M. It’s a perfect fit. Altruism meets community engagement meets impact.
Aaron Shipp, Habitat for Humanity

The Solar Texas team was granted access to Habitat’s previous build plans and ran a “life cycle analysis” on their existing recent builds. From that baseline, the team has designed the new building in a way that reduces their carbon footprint 75 percent, and are seeking to reach energy net zero, meaning more greenhouse gas will be removed than produced with their project.

Habitat has donated the build site and will be constructing the residence from the team’s design.

“We’re looking at this project to see what we could utilize sustainably and affordably to implement in our builds,” said Aaron Shipp, director of construction at Habitat. “We couldn’t do a project like this without A&M. It’s a perfect fit. Altruism meets community engagement meets impact.”
