Biography
Marcel Erminy received his Diploma in Architecture with Honors from Facultdad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, Universidad Central de Venezuela in 1987, he is licensed as an Architect from Colegio de Ingenieros de Venezuela (CIV #58.913) and also member of the Colegio de Arquitectos de Venezuela (CAV #3.884). He practiced architecture from 1987, working on residential, multifamily, commercial and institutional projects. In 1990 he was part of the winning team for the national competition to design the Venezuelan Pavilion for Expo’92 in Seville, Spain. After his key participation as Project Designer and Project Manager in the full development of the Expo project, he transferred to Seville to supervise the construction of the Venezuelan Pavilion and then extended his time in Spain for two more years to work for Cubiertas+MZOV (contractor for the project in Seville). Upon his return to Venezuela in 1994 he started his own professional practice and continued to develop projects at various scales. From 1997 to 2002 he returned to his alma mater to serve as a part time Architectural Project Professor while simultaneously continuing his practice in Caracas. During this period, he was invited by Texas A&M University Distinguished Professor the late Malcolm Quantrill for a week in the fall of 1999 to work with Quantrill’s Master of Architecture studio on a project based in Caracas, offering critical feedback for the students’ work and delivering two formal lectures.
Erminy joined the faculty of the Department of Architecture at TAMU in the fall of 2002 as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the field of Architectural Design, becoming a Senior Lecturer in 2009 and recently advancing to the position of Associate Professor of Practice (Fall 2015) and promoted to Professor os the Practice in 2023. In his twenty one years as a member of the TAMU faculty, Erminy has taught design studios al every level in the undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as in the Study Abroad programs in Santa Chiara, Italy and Barcelona, Spain for ten of those fourteen years. He developed the City and Photography Summer Program in Barcelona, which he has taught continuously from 2007 to 2019. He has also participated in final design reviews at the Barcelona Architecture Center since 2008. With his background in professional practice and having seen his designs become buildings, Erminy has been an instrumental part of establishing and implementing the Department of Architecture’s Integrated Studio, which began in 2009 and serves as the capstone studio for the students in the Bachelor of Environmental Design, a highly successful studio experience that integrates architecture, structures and systems curricula in a multidisciplinary design model that has helped to distinguish the BED program among those offered by other institutions, while inspiring esteem among architecture professionals for the students who complete the studio.
Erminy served as third and fourth year Undergraduate Program Coordinator from 2007 to 2009 and as Associate Department Head for the Master of Architecture Program, from 2012 to 2018. He has been part of the Architecture Lecture Series Committee; the Design Committee; and has served as a member of the Wright Gallery Curatorial Committee at the college level.
Erminy has received multiple teaching awards, including the Department of Architecture Graduate Teaching Award in 2012, 2014, 2018, and 2020, as well as the Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2014. Additionally, he was honored with the Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award at the College Level by the AFS TAMU in both 2014 and 2020. These awards are a testament to his dedication and excellence in teaching.
