{"id":10869,"date":"2022-02-15T14:40:09","date_gmt":"2022-02-15T20:40:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.arch.tamu.edu\/?p=10869"},"modified":"2022-06-22T14:08:15","modified_gmt":"2022-06-22T19:08:15","slug":"benefits-to-builders-of-texas-grown-wood-highlighted-at-crs-center-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arch.tamu.edu\/news\/2022\/02\/15\/benefits-to-builders-of-texas-grown-wood-highlighted-at-crs-center-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Benefits to builders of Texas-grown wood highlighted at CRS Center conference"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"This Texas-grown wood could benefit builders\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rvW-bbUvwTs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A building material with the potential to significantly impact the design and construction of structures in Texas was the focus of a Feb. 9, 2022 symposium hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arch.tamu.edu\/impact\/centers-institutes-outreach\/crs-center\/\">CRS Center for Leadership and Management in the Design and Construction Industry<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symposium speakers included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arch.tamu.edu\/staff\/james-michael-tate\/\">James Michael Tate<\/a>, Texas A&amp;M assistant professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arch.tamu.edu\/arch\">architecture<\/a>, and an advocate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apawood.org\/cross-laminated-timber\">cross laminated timber<\/a> (CLT) \u2014 a versatile, sustainable, prefabricated, solid engineered wood panel gaining popularity with builders \u2014 that\u2019s made of southern yellow pine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CLT panels were developed in Europe in the 1990s. They quickly became popular there because they are well-suited for construction in floors, walls, ceilings, roofs, as well as infrastructure at large construction sites. These benefits are leading to increasing usage by North American builders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bright future of CLT includes an opportunity for the Texas forestry industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUntil recently, CLT panels were made only with Douglas fir or spruce from Canada or Europe, not southern yellow pine, which is sustainably forested in Texas and the American Southeast,\u201d said Tate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSouthern yellow pine is abundantly available and can be transported in less than four hours from Houston, the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, San Antonio and Austin. These short transportation distances are significant environmental considerations,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wood processing also emits much less carbon, a greenhouse gas, than concrete or steel, he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CLT panels also present digital design opportunities as well as the prospect of simplified procedures at the construction jobsite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany construction materials require intensive labor, but CLT panels can significantly reduce that demand,\u201d said Tate. \u201cIt allows industrial design manufacturing levels of precision, but at a building scale.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tate demonstrated some of the possibilities of southern yellow pine-made cross-laminated timber with a piece he made that was on display in the Langford A pit during the symposium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The piece, \u201cCLT Construct #1,\u201d was originally created for display at a recent meeting of the Texas Forestry Association in Nacogdoches, Texas. Tate created it in a partnership with Aaron Stottlemyer, a forest resource analyst at the <a href=\"https:\/\/tfsweb.tamu.edu\/\">Texas A&amp;M Forest Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was the first time forestry industry professionals interacted with something designed and built using southern yellow pine CLT panels,\u201d said Tate. \u201cThe meeting drew a large group of foresters, loggers, and additional industry leaders from the East Texas Piney Woods.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tate, who built the piece at the College of Architecture\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arch.tamu.edu\/about\/facilities\/automated-fabrication-design-lab\/\">Automated Fabrication &amp; Design Lab<\/a> at the RELLIS Campus, looked to illustrate some of CLT\u2019s possibilities to the forestry professionals\u2019 gathering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI showed how panels might be pre-cut in a factory, shipped flat, and then quickly assembled onsite,\u201d he said. \u201cThis \u2018rapid deployment strategy\u2019 is something that would be advantageous when replacing housing destroyed by a hurricane, for example. Also, CLT panels are more durable and resilient, than light woodframe 2&#215;4 framing.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A building material with the potential to
