{"id":12505,"date":"2022-06-08T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-08T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.arch.tamu.edu\/?p=12505"},"modified":"2022-06-30T13:02:22","modified_gmt":"2022-06-30T18:02:22","slug":"school-of-architecture-debuts-at-texas-aampm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arch.tamu.edu\/news\/2022\/06\/08\/school-of-architecture-debuts-at-texas-aampm\/","title":{"rendered":"School of Architecture debuts at Texas A&amp;M"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It\u2019s a new era for education and research in design, construction management, and urban planning at Texas A&amp;M, as the university\u2019s new School of Architecture debuts June 8, 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To create a strategic plan for the new school, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arch.tamu.edu\/staff\/patrick-suermann\/\">Patrick Suermann<\/a>, interim dean of the School of Architecture, led a group of more than 125 faculty, staff and students in a daylong summit April 9 to identify the school\u2019s opportunities and actions to approach them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn line with our plan, we will find a visionary donor to name and guide our new school and\/or its departments, elevate our focus on the professions we serve, provide our disciplines with innovative, applied research findings, become a leader in interdisciplinary education and research, and ensure that our facilities better reflect our preeminence,\u201d said Suermann.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"School of Architecture debuts at Texas A&amp;M\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2Cri3uUrpx8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The newly christened School of Architecture offers a first-rate education in a diverse range of disciplines that address critical, complex challenges in the built and natural environments. Graduating students are equipped to become leaders in their fields and make a difference in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The school\u2019s three departments \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arch.tamu.edu\/arch\/\">architecture<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arch.tamu.edu\/cosc\/\">construction science<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arch.tamu.edu\/laup\/\">landscape architecture and urban planning<\/a> \u2014 offer a total of 16 degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collectively, these degrees represent a wide array of disciplines in the built and natural environments:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>structures where people live, work, and receive medical treatment;<\/li><li>roads, bridges and transit systems we rely on every day;<\/li><li>parks where people reconnect with the natural environment;<\/li><li>systems that help communities mitigate and recover from the effects of natural hazards, and many more.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As leading researchers in the built and natural environments, the school\u2019s faculty and student scholars are discovering meaningful solutions to critical issues that face society.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020-2021, $7.7 million in external funding was awarded to Texas A&amp;M\u2019s built and natural environment researchers from 33 sources, including the National Science Foundation, National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, and many other leading sources of research funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department of Visualization, previously grouped with the departments in the former College of Architecture, is now housed in the new <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.tamu.edu\/undergraduate\/performance-visualization-fine-arts\/\">Texas A&amp;M School of Performance, Visualization and
