The furniture was created by art and design students at Prairie View A&amp;M in a partnership with the Texas A&amp;M College of Architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They aren\u2019t \u201chands-off\u201d museum pieces: it\u2019s functioning furniture with benches and tables made from high-density foam, wood, recycled metal and other materials. There\u2019s even a game board with checkers that feature prominent African Americans such as Maya Angelou, Cicely Tyson, Jackie Robinson and President Barack Obama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Some pieces are created from repurposed oil drums, which dip into the history of Black Texans and the oil industry,&#8221; said Johnson, assistant professor of the practice in art at Prairie View A&amp;M, who led her university\u2019s project contributions. &#8220;Each piece has historical significance.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The effort, called The Sankofa Project, began when Johnson was approached by Laurie Lisonbee, instructional assistant professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arch.tamu.edu\/viz\/\">visualization<\/a> at the College of Architecture, about the project after Johnson curated \u201cShe Matters,\u201d a 2019 exhibit at the college\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arch.tamu.edu\/about\/facilities\/wright-gallery\/\">Wright Gallery<\/a>. Lisonbee is also a member of the gallery\u2019s curatorial committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"general-slider\">\n\t<div class=\"general-slider__inner\" aria-label=\"Image carousel. aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In her African American art class at Prairie View A&amp;M, Johnson introduces Adinkra symbols, which originated in present-day Ghana. She led a team of student designers who created the unique furniture pieces inspired by and featuring the symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I had a blast during this whole process,&#8221; said Alexis Adjorlolo, a senior architecture student at Prairie View A&amp;M. &#8220;Conceptualizing and designing something really unique that is meant to be used enjoyed by the public &#8230; it was great.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students\u2019 designs were fabricated at the College of Architecture\u2019s <a data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"4363\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arch.tamu.edu\/about\/facilities\/automated-fabrication-design-lab\/\">Automated Fabrication &amp; Design Lab<\/a>, then brought to the museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plans are underway to collect data on how the furniture is used to create additional pieces to add to the museum\u2019s permanent collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a May 7, 2021 opening ceremony at the museum where representatives from all of the project\u2019s partners gathered, College of Architecture dean Jorge Vanegas said the collection has &#8220;incredible heart&#8221; and should be celebrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is a constant reminder that through art, we can change people. Through art, we can change communities,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The furniture is part of the permanent collection of the museum, 500 Pruitt St. in Bryan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funded by a Texas A&amp;M <a href=\"https:\/\/academyarts.tamu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts<\/a> Enhancement Grant, the project is an ongoing collaboration between the Texas A&amp;M College of Architecture, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pvamu.edu\/soa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prairie View A&amp;M College of
